CITIZENS OF MADISON:

Be Part of the Solution

To Stormwater Pollution!

Did you know that runoff from our neighborhoods and streets are polluting our lakes, creeks, streams and rivers?

The City of Madison (Madison) is located within two of five distinct drainage basins found in Mississippi.  The east side of the county lies in the Pearl River Basin (PRB), and makes up the majority of Madison’s drainage area.  The west side of the county is in the Big Black River Basin (BBRB), which receives drainage from portions of the northernmost area of Madison.  Drainage from Madison enters the PRB from Haley Creek, Hearn Creek, Brashear Creek, Culley Creek and Culley Lake.  Drainage into the BBRB comes from several small tributaries and enters Bear Creek.

Stormwater Pollution occurs as water flows across the ground and picks up debris, chemicals, dirt, and other pollutants and deposits them into a storm drain system or water body.  Storm drains are a non-treated system!  The water that flows into your storm drains will end up in the drainage basins mentioned above. Homeowners contribute to pollutants that enter Madison’s water bodies through:

soil                             yard debris

oil                               trash and litter

fertilizers                   pesticides/herbicides

animal waste               household hazardous waste

car washing                paints and chemicals

So YES, what we do in our neighborhood and how we treat our environment is important to the quality of water and the ecosystems from Madison to the Gulf of Mexico.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP MADISON?

Here are a few things that homeowners can do to help reduce stormwater pollution.

·       Keep grass clippings and trash out of the street and gutters. Compost or bag them.

·  Reduce fertilizer and pesticide use.

·  Recycle used motor oil don’t dump! Most             automotive stores collect waste oil.

·  Park your car on the grass before washing.

·  Spread the word about protecting our

waters to friends and neighbors.

·  Put litter in its place.

·    Take your old tires, batteries and paint to the Madison County Road Department in Canton, Ms.

3137 S. Liberty Street, Canton, Ms.

    (601) 859-1031

·    Clean up after your pet.

·    Clean paint brushes in a sink, not outdoors.
