Smoke Detectors

How often should a change the battery?                                                                                                                                                            The battery in your smoke detector should be changed every six months. An easy way to remember is any time you reset your clocks change you smoke detector battery. Even if its wired into your house you should still check to see if there is a battery because many of them have a back up.

Where should I have smoke detectors?                                                                                                                                                              The best placements of smoke detectors is to have one in every room of the house. At a minimum you should have a smoke detector in the hallway adjacent to all bedrooms and in the kitchen.

How often should I check my smoke detector?                                                                                                                                                Most smoke detectors should have a small button on the face of them. You should press the button once a month and it should make a beep or other indication to signal that it is working.

How the EMS system works

Where does my call go when I dial 911?                                                                                                                                                         When you dial 911 your call goes directly to the police department where you will tell the dispatcher your emergency.  From there the dispatcher will send American Medical Response (the ambulance),  Fire/Rescue, and the Police.

Why do so many people show up at a medical call?                                                                                                                              American Medical Response is the ambulance service responsible for covering Rankin, Hinds and Madison county. The fire and police departments respond on every medical call within there response area so that they may provide emergency medical services as soon as possible.

Does the Fire Dept. take people to the hospital?                                                                                                                                              No, our rescue does not have the capability to transport a patient. Transport is the responsibility of American Medical Response.
