Who they are... |

The Madison Fire Dept. depends on its volunteers to provide additional manpower and skill at all types of emergencies that the paid firefighters could not handle on their own. The background of our volunteers is very diverse they consist of police officers, public works employees, college students, and everyday citizens that just feel like giving back to their community.
What they do... There’s an old saying in the fire service, “The only difference between a paid firefighter and a volunteer firefighter is the pay check” and that's exactly right. Our volunteers provide fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services just like the paid firefighters. Our volunteers all undergo in-house training but many of them have received training at the Mississippi State Fire Academy and have been trained to the First Responder and Emergency Medical Technician Basic level. Whether it going into a burning building, doing CPR, or just helping to clean up, our volunteers do it all.
What they've done... - Purchased Rescue 5 for the Department which is used as a rehab truck for long drawn out operations. - Helped purchase Rescue 1 which is station 2's primary rescue vehicle. - Paid half the cost of our new TNT Rescue tools. - Made it possible for the department to maintain an average three minute response time.
When they meet... Our volunteers meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month at Station 2 at 7:00pm. Station 2 is located at 7466 Old Canton Rd. beside the airport and across from Ridgecrest Baptist Church. For more information feel free to call us at 856-8894.
To become a volunteer - Be at least 18 years of age. - Live within our response area. - Attend three meetings after which you will be voted on. - Then you go through a 6 month probationary period after which the volunteers then vote on whether or not to make a volunteer firefighter. - There must be an open slot for us to accept new volunteers, and we prefer that you are no longer in high school.
