It is the mission of the Madison Police Department to be a leader in promoting professionalism and providing courteous enhanced service from its law enforcement officers to the citizens of Madison and visitors to the City by:

· Enhancing the quality of public service provided to the citizens of Madison by providing and encouraging proactive training and educational programs for law enforcement

· Striving to create and endorse positive effects on law enforcement’s ability to reduce both crime and the fear of crime in the City of Madison.

· Encouraging the mutual sharing of resources and ideas among officers of the Madison Police Department and citizens by reinforcing open lines of communication and being the vanguard for the future of professional law enforcement within the City of Madison.

· Forging a partnership between law enforcement and the citizens we serve to enhance the quality of life within the community.

Residents of the City of Madison enjoy one of the lowest crime rates in the nation, thanks in large part to the professional and efficient Madison Police Department. The Madison Police Department is dedicated to preventing crime, to strictly enforcing the law, as well as to providing courteous service to the citizens of Madison and to visitors. An example of devotion to excellence is the department's recent achievement of national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA). Accreditation requires 439 criteria must be met, and the process takes approximately two and a half years to complete. There currently is only one other police department in the state of Mississippi that has achieved CALEA accreditation.

There are 41 sworn officers on staff, supported by 15 civilian personnel. The department is divided into four major divisions -- Administrative, Patrol, Investigative, and Support Services.

The city is divided into six beats/zones for coverage by marked patrol units. However, the department utilizes three to six flexible zones, which have been designed for reconfiguration within minutes when required to respond to special events or emergency situations. In an effort to extend protection to Madison’s schools, the department is using a dedicated radio frequency to link every school office with the dispatcher at police headquarters.

The Madison Police Department offers several crime prevention programs to residents. These include home and business safety/security surveys, neighborhood watch programs and house watches while residents are out of town for extended periods of time. The police department was also the founding sponsor of the Madison County “Triad” program for senior citizens. Triad is a partnership of law enforcement agencies and retired and senior citizens designed to address crime issues specifically affecting older citizens.
