When do I need a permit?
If you are planning on doing any work on your home such as, adding a new room, closing in your garage, building a storage unit, roof work or putting up a fence, you will need a permit. It is good practice to always call our department before you being any type of work on your home, that way we can tell you what you will need for your permit and you can avoid a stop work order on you progress.
How much is a permit?
Permits fees are based on the cost of construction plus applicable inspection fees.
How long is a permit valid?
As set by our city ordinance a permit is valid as long as construction does not halt for 180 days.
How long does it take to get a permit?
Most permits can be issued the same day; however, if you plan to add a room to your home or build a new home one of our inspectors must approve the plans before the permit can be issued.
How do I get a permit?
Permit applications are available at our office which is located at 1239 Highway 51. Either you or your contractor may apply for your permit.
What do I need to get my permit?
New commercial permits require three sets of plans and residential permits require two sets of plans and may require a letter from your Homeowners Association (HOA) approving such work or changes.
I own a rental home in Madison, what do I need?
As set by our rental ordinance, each rental unit in Madison requires one of the following in the amount of $10,000.00; a surety bond, collateral, or a bank letter of credit. In some cases you may need a letter from your HOA. A rental application and application fee is required at the yearly cost of $100.00. The rental application and application fee is valid for one year. Should your tenant change you will only be required to fill out another rental application.
