Police Department

Department Organization

The Madison Police Department was formed in 1944 after the city became incorporated.  Since its inception, the department has strived for the highest degree of excellence and professionalism, allowing it to be rated as one of the best in the state of Mississippi. In 2002 the Department was the second law enforcement agency in the State of Mississippi to achieve national accreditation.

The Department is composed of two major components: the Operations Division and the Administrative Support Division.

The Operations Division is comprised of the following sections and units:

Patrol Section
Considered the "back bone" of the Department, the Patrol Section is responsible for the primary safety and security of the citizens of Madison.  This involves pro-active patrol and crime prevention measures such as the vacation house watch program as well as the investigation of crimes, accidents and other incidents that occur within the city.  The Section consists of the uniformed patrol shifts, the traffic unit, the special response team (SRT), special enforcement unit (ICAP), the honor guard and crime prevention unit.

Criminal Investigations Section
The Criminal Investigations Section provides follow up and in depth investigation of criminal activity.  This includes employing full time investigators and analysts as well as participation in local and regional task forces.  The Narcotics/K-9 Unit provides pro-active drug enforcement keeping our community safe and drug free for our children and others.

The Administrative Support Division is comprised of the following sections:

Administrative Services Section
The Administrative Services Section provides personnel related services as well as oversees applicant processing, background investigations, special projects as assigned by the Chief of Police, and maintenance for the Madison Justice complex and other police properties.  The Section also oversees the Animal Control Unit which keeps the city free of stray animals and assists in locating lost pets.  The Animal Control Unit also assists with the operation of the city's Animal Rescue Shelter.

Court Services Section
The Court Services Section provides for records and municipal court administration.  This includes the collection and processing of fines and fees associated with traffic citations and municipal court cases.  The Warrants Unit pro-actively seeks and apprehends individuals wanted by the Department for criminal activity and contempt of court.

Professional Development Section

The Professional Development Section maintains national accreditation, manages and oversees Department training, and ensures Department policies and procedures are being adhered to.  The Section consists of the Accreditation Unit, the Training Unit and the Internal Affairs and Inspections Unit.

Technical Services Section
The Technical Services Section provides administration and support for computers; in-house, local and regional networks; advanced communications systems, mobile data terminals and police vehicle audio/video recording systems.
