About the Department
Welcome to the Community Development Department Home Page!
The Community Development Department is the chief planning agency for Madison. Through a variety of programs and activities, we strive to enhance the physical environment; improve the quality of life for residents, businesses, students, and visitors; and support the diversity of our very special community.
This is a time of great excitement and challenge in Madison. We continue to be a magnet for retail, medical, service, educational and related companies, while also encompassing many unique, intimate, and historic neighborhoods. Our ongoing challenge is to help manage the balance among the needs of neighborhood residents and the business community.
The Department is organized into four major divisions:
- Planning and Development
- Floodplain Management
- Geographic Information Systems - GIS
The Department of Community Development provides guidance to owners, developers, and design related professionals as to the development of land in the City of Madison. We are committed to providing help in guiding applicants through the review process and ensuring that any and all development that occurs is beneficial to the city.
The Community Development Staff is also responsible for updating the Comprehensive Plan, including the Zoning Ordinance and Land Use Map, enforcing the Zoning Ordinance, Floodplain Management Ordinance and other development related ordinances.
Some of these ordinances you will find here on this site. If you would like a copy of any other ordinance please contact us by email or phone.
